In February of 1997 we were asked by a major airline to develop a baggage conveyor to be located along the side of the service staircase on passenger loading bridges (Jetways) at the newly renovated terminal at Washington National Airport.
We designed and built three such conveyors in our back yard shop at our home. We met the time deadline for the grand re-opening at the airport and the conveyors have been in continuous operation ever since. Although the conveyors still work well, the fact is that they are heavy and expensive. a major airline was looking for an inexpensive product that would allow gate agents and ramp personnel to quickly move overflow baggage from the bridge cab area to the tarmac level. Our solution was the AGE Smart Slide, which we have been producing at the rate of 15 per week ever since January of 1998.
The AGE Smart Slide is a device made of stainless steel, powder coated mild steel and fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP). The slide has gained incredible popularity because it is affordable, extremely durable, ergonomically correct and vital to handling excess carry-on baggage, baby strollers and wheelchairs in a timely manner.
The AGE Smart Slide also has an optional electric winch mounted at the top of the slide to facilitate lowering/raising electric scooters and wheelchairs. Another major airline told us that their 1st year savings on wheelchair repairs alone owing to the smooth operation of the winch, paid for their winches nation wide. Now, with every slide that they order, a AGE Winch is included.
To date there are about 2500 AGE Smart Slides in operation in over 50 airports ranging from Seattle to San Diego, Houston, Boston and down to Miami for most major airlines. It has become the standard slide by which others are judged. There are more AGE Smart Slides in operation than all other brands combined.
As for the future, several airlines have asked for a bridge mounted elevator and it is now available. Another product our customers have asked for is a dolly platform to deliver wheelchairs from the bottom of the AGE Smart Slide to the aircraft hold. We now have the AGE Hand Baggage Cart and the AGE Lift.
